Quit Carrying the Tools of Your Addiction
Return to home
If you met a recovering alcoholic who carried a bottle opener on his key chain, your brain might bounce around inside of your skull. And for good reason. That's a pretty good indication that the drunk is holding onto part of the addiction. The same is true of sex addicts. The odds of staying sober improve if you eliminate the tools you used to act out - not as much as is convenient, but as much as is possible. So take an inventory of your acting out. If your acting out involved carrying cash money, credit cards, a checkbook, membership cards to private clubs, telephone numbers of addictive contacts, cell phones, condoms, or other implements, decide if you really need to carry those things into your recovery. If you can possibly do without them, then quit carrying those things. If you make it more difficult to act out, you will be less likely to act out.
