George Reeves starred in 104 Superman episodes between 1951 and 1957. He committed suicide in 1959. That seemed odd to me at the time. As Superman, he had many cool powers. I particularly liked his X-Ray vision. Superman used X-Ray vision in the service of Truth, Justice, and the American way. Sex addicts wish they had X-Ray vision for other reasons. We can also use imaginary X-Ray vision in recovery.
Sex addicts see the surface of other people. But we can imagine seeing the truth beneath the surface disguise. People disguise themselves is a huge variety of ways. They disguise themselves with beauty, wealth, busyness, piety, knowledge, and a bunch of other things. When we respond to the disguises, we collaborate with the disguiser's efforts to avoid the reality of themselves. When we disguise ourselves, we invite others to collaborate with our efforts to avoid our reality.
But when we use our X-Ray vision for recovery we see better who people really are. Sometimes we can only know that someone is disguised. But that is better than mistaking the disguise for the person. Sometimes we can infer the inner person from the disguise. For instance, the person, woman or man, who as gone to great lengths to be "sexy" is disguising a deeper need. They are probably not really saying, "I need sex". They are probably saying, "I need love, attention, respect, affection, and genuine contact with other people. When we use Recovery X-Ray vision to get the real message, we know that the person is just like us. And, when we have seen a person with our X-Ray vision, it is much, much harder to accept the phony exterior - hard to take the disguise in as an object of sexual obsession. In other words, when you use Recovery X-Ray vision, you improved your empathy and when you are in empathy with another person you cannot at that moment treat the person as an object. You have, instead, the opportunity to interact with the person as a real person, just like you. And the opportunity to grow one more moment into your recovery.
So try Recovery X-Ray vision. See what you will see.
